Why is it important to keep your elbows bent whilst riding?

Bending your elbows when riding helps to maintain a more balanced, relaxed and secure position in the saddle. It allows you to absorb the horse’s movements more effectively, reducing the impact on your arms and upper body. Additionally, bending your elbows helps to maintain a soft contact with the horse’s mouth through the reins, promoting a more communicative and responsive ride.
Having your elbows too stiff or locked can cause a rigid, unyielding seat, which can interfere with the horse’s movements and balance. It can also cause the rider to become fatigued more quickly, as they are unable to absorb the horse’s movements effectively.
